Policy
Up to five (5) days of paid bereavement leave will be provided to benefit eligible employees for each instance in which they suffer a death in their immediate family. For the purpose of bereavement leave, “immediate family” is defined as the employee’s spouse, significant other, parent, step-parent or guardian, child or step-child, sibling or step-sibling.
Up to three (3) days of paid bereavement leave will be provided to benefit eligible employees for each instance in which they suffer a death in their extended family. For the purpose of bereavement leave, “extended family” is defined as the employee’s grandparent, grandchild, parents-in-law, grandparents-in-law, siblings-in-law.
Employees may, with their supervisor’s approval, use any available paid vacation leave for additional time off, as necessary.
Procedure
Employees who wish to take time off due to the death of an immediate or extended family member should notify their supervisor as soon as possible.
Employees who abuse University leave policies and procedures may be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including, termination.
