As director of the Women’s Resource Center, I have worked with 30 student staff members to develop a vibrant and active center that offers students the opportunity to engage in experiential learning, serve as advocates for survivors of gender violence, and become leaders in the struggle for gender equality. Each student staff member serves on one of our five teams: programming, advocacy, marketing, design, and writing. We plan to add a mentoring and a fundraising team this year. Each team has a leader that coordinates its activities with me. Through this process, students gain substantial experience as they model professionals in fields that interest them and have an opportunity to serve in leadership roles. In addition, they consistently engage in work that fosters the university’s mission to seek social justice and serve others.

Students who choose to work at the center will join one of our existing teams and/or collaborate with the director and returning students to design and develop the new teams. I assign students to the team that interests them the most and allow them to switch teams as they wish.

  • Programming Team: develops forums, workshops, and discussions groups, including Take Back the Night in the Fall and our two-week Feminist Festival in the Spring. The team also develops seminars to advance women in fields in which women are underrepresented, including business, STEM, and politics.
  • Writing and Art Team: produces a quarterly social justice magazine, Feminist Forum, that explores feminist issues. Team members work as editors, graphic designers, writers, and photographers
  • Advocacy Team: develops trained advocates who assist survivors of gender violence. This year, the team will also develop other forms of advocacy work that advances gender equity. Some members of the advocacy team are trained LGBTQ advocates. We hope to expand this program this year.
  • Marketing Team: designs and implements plans to publicize the WRC’s activities. The marketing team often coordinates with the writing and art team to develop and implement marketing plans.

In all our work, we seek to emulate the Jesuit ideal of living a life with and for others to create a more just world. I look forward to meeting those of you who are interested in joining the WRC staff. Thank you for your interest.
